Anderson 16 - Huron 5One game to decide the 2009 Oak Park River Forest Pony Championship. One last opportunity for 25 young men representing Andeson Shumaker and Huron Constulting to compete on the diamond for the town title. Coming off an impressive win on Saturday, Anderson was hoping to carryover some momentum by getting on the board early. In the top of the 1st, they got exactly what they wanted and then some. Andrew Galo led off the game with a walk and continuing his incredible power display Sedrick McDonald hit his 5th home run the last 4 games to put Anderson on top 2-0. With one out Robert Spillane singled and another blast over the left field fence, this one by Liam Sorensen, doubled the lead to 4-0. Not resting on their laurels, Anderson came back for more in the 2nd innning. Jacob Edwards singled, Galo walked, and McDonald was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Edwards was able to score on a sacrafice fly by Jon Ernest and with two outs Robert Spillane tripled to score Galo and McDonald. The Anderson offense continued to roll in the top of the 3rd. With two outs Patrick Yerkes doubled, Steven Skrine singled, and Edwards doubled off the left field fence to score Yerkes. Capping the scoring in the inning, Galo singled plating Skrine and Andeson was up 9-0. Spillane got the start on the mound for Anderson and threw a terrific game. In three innings he gave up just 4 hits, struck out 7 and walked 2. The bottom of the 3rd inning though was when Huron would start to come alive. Harry Gay lead off the inning with a single to right. Daniel Gryzlo walked ahead of Niles Sykes who drove the first pitch he saw over the left field fence drawing Huron to within 6. Unfazed though, Spillane was able to strikeout 3 of the next 4 hitters to minimize the damage. Anderson tallied again in the top of the 4th on a double to right center by Patrick Clifford driving in Sorensen who had reached after getting hit by a pitch. The Anderson offense was cooled during the middle innings in large part due to the efforts of Ian Steele on the mound. He threw 3 total innings yielding 4 hits and 2 runs with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. Anderon's second pitcher of the day, Joe Rumoro gutted out a performance without his best stuff and was still able to hold Huron to 2 runs on 4 hits with 4 stikeouts it 3 1/3 innings. In the top of the 6th Anderson added a couple more. McDonald was hit by a pitch and stole second. Spillane singled and both runners scored on a doulbe by Sorensen. The game was put out of reach in the 7th with RBI singles from McDonald, Spillane, Sorensen, and Clifford to put the game at 16-3. Refusing to go quietly, Huron began to rally in the bottom of the 7th. With one out Andrew Lofgren walked and back-to-back doubles by Gay and Gryzlo brough the game to 16-5. Anderson just had too much on this day though. McDonald came in to retire the next two batters and close the game, and the season, out. A tremendous team effort for the last 3 days lead Andeson to claim the title and provide the first repeat winners of the Pony Championship in recent memory. |

Huron 1 - Anderson 11On a picture perfect Saturday morning Huron Consulting could claim the village championship with a win. Anderson Shumaker had their season on the line and was just trying to force a deciding game Sunday. Huron came out of the gates swinging. In the top of the 1st Daniel Gryzlo singled on the first pitch and Niles Sykes singled on the very next pitch. Following a wild pitch, Phil Jelcic knocked in Gryzlo with a sacrafice fly to left. After Muda Kahn reached on an error, Patrick Yerkes nabbed a pop fly behind first base and was able to double up the runner at first allowing Anderson to escape the inning giving up just one run. The offense of Anderson would respond in the bottom of the 1st. Andrew Galo opened the inning reaching on an error and Sedrick McDonald followed with a single. Jon Ernest hit a rope to left scoring Galo and McDonald scored on a fieders choice to give Anderson a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd Anderson would add 3 more runs. Jacob Edwards started it all getting hit by a pitch. Galo and McDonald then walked and with the bases loaded Ernest delievered another sharp single this time knocking in 2. To complete the scoring in the inning, Liam Sorensen struck a single into the hole between short and third to plate McDonald. Although Anderson's offensive game was excellent, the story of the day may have been the outing on the mound for Galo. He gutted his way through the first inning and then took control. Over the rest of the game he gave up just 1 hit with 2 strike outs and no walks. In the bottom of the third Anderson blew the game open. Chris Peterson began it with a line drive home run to left field. Yerkes singled, Steven Skrine walked and with two outs McDonald hit a three run blast to left center. Anderson was able to end the game in the bottom of the fifth via the slaughter rule by adding 2 more runs. Jack Van Ermen doubled to right, Galo tripled to deep center, and McDonald hit a walk-off bomb to left center field, his 4th home run in the last 3 games. With the victory Anderson was able to force a final deciding game for the village championship on Sunday. Binder 11 Mickeys 10 |
